HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!

Collection: Virginia Mahoney

Here’s another special occasion card made by a Famous Studios artist for my parents 25th wedding anniversary… which would date this from December 1956. My parents met while both were working at Fleischer Studios and they became one of the many studio romances that led to marriage.

The signatures on this card are a good survey of some well known people working for Famous Studios in the 1950’s...

Al Eugster, Dave Tendlar, Nick Tafuri, Tom Johnson, and William Henning were long time animators—all had worked for both Fleischer and Famous Studios—as well as other studios. Bob Little and Liesel Howson, also long time employees, painted the animation backgrounds. Leonard McCormick was responsible for camera work and Win Sharples scored music for the cartoons. Jack Mercer was best known as the gravelly voice of Popeye….. Ellsworth Barthen and Mike Myer were story writers……and Mina Morrisey was Head of cel painting. Just to mention a few……

  1. Judging by the initial D.T. on the bottom right, I wonder if Dave Tendlar drew this...

  3. I love this inner office stuff the most...stuff most of us would enver get a chance to see otherwise. It really is an insight into the community of an animation studio. Thanks for sharing!

  4. It sounds like a warm environment to grow up in. What jobs did your mother have there? Did she keep working also?

    1. Yes, it was a warm environment-- though didn't learn to appreciate that till much later in life. My mother & father met while both were working at Fleischer Studios- she had worked in both the inking and opa quing (cell painting) departments. After she was home with kids she wrote stories, a number of which were used, for Famous Studios cartoons--- Also, she wrote stories for some of the Harvey Comics that used Famous characters. One day soon will do a post just on her- since she was Max Fleischer's daughter she has an interesting background.
